English Medieval Studies

Wilcuman! – Welcume!

The team of English Medieval Studies at Ruhr-University Bochum specializes in different aspects of the languages, literatures, and cultures of England and beyond from c. 500 until c. 1500.
We invite students of B.A. Anglistik/Amerikanistik, M.A. Anglistik/Amerikanistik, and M.Ed. English to discover the richness and variety of medieval England by visiting

  • the introductory Übung “Medieval English Language and Literature (MEL)”, which is offered every semester;
  • different B.A. seminars such as “Discovering Old English” or “Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales
  • and advanced seminars such as “Runes and Runic Writing in Anglo-Saxon England and Beyond” or “Who’s Afraid of Margery Kempe?”.

Our teaching evolves around Old and Middle English key texts in both poetry and prose, and in the epigraphic as well as in the manuscript context. To approach and appreciate medieval sources in the original, we transmit to our students skills in Philology, Literary Studies, and Historical Linguistics as well as interdisciplinary methods and approaches.
