The 24th Studientag Englisches Mittelalter (SEM) takes place on 15 and 16 November 2024 at the English Seminar of Ruhr-University Bochum.
The SEM offers the next generation of scholars an exceptional opportunity to present and discuss ongoing research on the English Middle Ages. Contributions are welcomed from all levels of study, from undergraduate theses to postdoctoral research. This year’s SEM will once more take on the new format successfully introduced in 2023. Research projects can be presented in either of the following formats:
We invite suggestions for presentations on linguistic, literary, and general cultural studies topics (including archaeology, palaeography, art history and related disciplines) in the form of an abstract. Abstracts (max. 350 words exclusive of bibliography) in either PDF or Word format should be sent by e-mail to medieval-english@rub.de no later than 16 August 2024. Applicants will be notified of selection decisions by the end of August 2024.
Additionally, the 24th SEM will host a returning Roundtable on teaching. Students and teachers of English Medieval Studies are invited to address challenges in teaching Old and Middle English language, literature, and culture and to develop and share innovative teaching methods and materials.

Registration for the 24th Studientag Englisches Mittelalter will take place in October 2024. All participants (including non-presenting participants) must register. We will announce detailed registration and payment modalities by the end of September.
